This is something I've been wanting to post about for a while but wasn't sure if it was something my readers would like to see. However, after something that happened today I've decided that I need to get this off my chest.
In August last year I bought a pair of the American Apparel Disco Pants in Black after reading so many amazing reviews on how great they are and how long they last/go with everything etc, etc. I got my hands on a 25% off discount and ended up getting them for around £55 so that's £19 off the RRP of £74. Still steep, but not quite as steep as the original price. From then on it was a love affair that I never thought would end. I wore them lots and they really did go with everything. That was until, about a month on, I realised that bits of the elastic around my crotch area had started to fray and were hanging out of the trousers. My boyfriend also commented that he could see my pants through them. Now, with them being such thick material and made of nylon I knew this shouldn't be happening. Unfortunatly, I had stupidly thrown out the receipt and so couldn't just take them in store and get a refund. I contacted AA through email and social networking with no prevail and only after my 3rd attempt contacting them through Twitter (which involved me having to complain about their shocking customer service) was I replied to. The women I spoke to, Crystal, was very helpful and referred me to the UK helpline which was no where to be seen on the website. When I phoned the helpline they were also very helpful explaining that they would send me an electronic copy of my receipt and that I could get an exchange due to there being a 6 month exchange clause for faulty items. I was very positive after this after having recieved such amazing customer service but I had to wait until December when I went home to exchange the trousers as I could only do this in store and there is no store in Aberdeen. This is when it all went wrong. The manger in store was so, so rude I can't even begin to explain. He opened by saying that he couldn't exchange them as I had machine washed them and that what was happening to my trousers would only happen if they're machine washed. Oh yeah, I'm sure you know exactly what they look like when they've been machine washed because you must wear them all the time as a guy... I explained I hadn't ever put them near a washing machine as when I bought them (in this exact store, might I add) I was told only to hand wash them. He, however, didn't seem to care and stayed adamant that I had machine washed them. My mum, who was with me at the time, then questioned the man to whether he was calling me a liar then as I had not put them in a machine. His reply, "I'm not saying that, they just look like they've been machine washed." So, pretty much calling me a liar then. I left the store feeling so cheated and upset with the way I had been treated - no matter what, excellent customer service should be any managers first priority. Anyway, long story short I contacted the women I had previously spoken to via email and she completely ignored me. When I contacted her for the second time she completely fobbed me off stating that the matter was now closed and that there was nothing I could do now and she wasn't the person I should be speaking to - she provided no further information about who exaclty I should have been speaking to, however.
Fast forward to last Saturday, when I received a pair of Disco Pants in Noir which I had ordered off of Glamorous.com. I have to say, they are very good dupes of the AA ones only with much thinner material. Tonight, however, after only a few days of wearing them, I looked down to discover the thread just under the zip area had become undone and I now have a hole right in the front of my Disco Pants exposing my pants. Seriously, is it just me?! I've contacted Glamorous about this but I'm really in two minds about getting another pair. After actually buying the AA ones I started to hear nothing but bad reviews about them and I don't know if it's just that me and Disco Pants aren't meant to be or if they really are just shoddy quality all round.
So the moral of the story is, kids, keep your bloody receipt. I also will never shop at American Apparel ever again because I'm so angry with the amount of money I spent and the customer service I received in return.
If you read to the end of this then well done! Sorry if you didn't like this but I just needed to post about it as, as I said, it's been something I've been thinking about for a while. What's your Disco Pant experience been like?

Wow I cant believe you received such terrible service! I have heard bad things about AA before and to be honest, couldn't bring myself to pay the steep price for a pair of Disco pants and now I'm glad I didnt!
ReplyDeletexx
yeah, you're lucky you didn't! i wish i'd read more bad reviews before i went ahead with it because it's just made me regret it so much. AA are so overpriced and their garments are horrific quality - i've heard so many complains about other things than just the disco pants x
DeleteThis is so bad! I hate shitty customer service - its the one thing thats guaranteed to put me off (and why I love Topshop). If you're tempted to get another pair try Missguided - I've got their Frenchy leggings (£9.99 I think) and seem no worse the wear for machine washing them. I've got a new post up, would love it if you took a look xxx

Also I didnt add the hyperlinks to this, it did it automatically, and the second one doesnt go to the right place haha.
ReplyDeletehaha don't worry! i installed skimlinks way back when i first started my blog and it adds in hyperlinks to random things - does it on my blog posts too!
Deletei've had the same problem with disco pants i got from Very! the second day i wore them they ripped and i had a hole in the same place! i think its the material of them, its so stretchy that it must stretch so much that it can't hack it and rip.
ReplyDeletei was really disappointed cos i love disco pants!!
yeah that must be it, so annoying though isn't it :( especially when you hear so many good reviews! x
Deletethat is absolutely shocking. to be honest, i knew american apparel were very sneaky bunch of guys when i read an article about their models and floor staff being treated in a rude and degrading way - thankfully i've only ever purchased lip balm from american apparel; wasn't even american apparels brand so i'm glad of that.
ReplyDeletei have however bought some glamorous disco pants, and i was impressed for the little money i paid - unfortunately they were way smaller than my standard sizing so i had to return them. i do have holes in nearly all of my pants though...it isn't just you. holes in pants is like bread and butter for me!
i would have definitely put my foot down and raised voices until i got some kind of compensation for the hassle. what do you have to lose really? you had already experienced terrible customer service to throw you off buying from them again, i'd go back and shout at him. i'd embarrass him in front of his staff. i get so angry when somebody's rude to me! i take it so personally. let me have a go at him for you :)
oh? what article was that? i can assure you my mum caused enough of a scene in the shop but he didn't seem embarrassed at all that was the most annoying part! literally made my blood boil. i want to start a war against american apparel just because of that one man haha! x
DeleteIm really sick of AA, I got a cross-over body for my birthday and within 10 minutes of wearing it, it had developed a massive hole down the side. Although I had pretty good customer service on the phone, they made it so difficult saying that they couldnt find my order...and now (2 weeks on) I get an email saying they wont exchange it because it's not in stock and they wont ship one over :(. Considering they are pretty pricey, I cant believe they treat their customers like this!xx

Urgh that is so crappy!! I've bought a few overpriced items from AA in the past but I've never thought the quality has been that amazing. I think the material of disco pants, dupes or no, means they just won't last anyway! xx
ReplyDeleteEveryone I have ever spoken to about AA Disco Pants and American Apparel in general had nothing positive to say. The brand itself is a total rip off in my opinion anyway.
ReplyDeleteBUT, I have two pairs of the Glamorous disco pants, charcoal and navy, and I've worn them both lots, washed them in the washing machine and they're both still in perfect condition. I think you may have just been unlucky with a dodgy pair!
If you haven't given up and are still on the hunt for disco pants, Topshop have just released they're own ones and they're pretty solid material, and good for returns etc :)

Wow, can't believe how this happened. Good that you shared this with us. Such a shame!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you! I bought a pair about a year and a half ago and they were fine for the first 3 months and the same things happened. I received really bad customer service until I was able to send them back to america for a refund. The Glasgow store is shocking! The manager wouldnt return a pair of riding pants that had a massive hole in the leg that I had just bought half an hour before! As you know from today's tutorial I like their VM but won't buy from them again!
ReplyDelete:)
it's actually mental the respone i've recieved from this! i don't actually understand how they're still in business as it seems like no one's had a good experience with them. was the manager in glasgow a guy? he was the biggest arsehole i've ever met and i can't believe customer service didn't even apologise to me after i complained about him. every single one of them are arseholes!
DeleteHey... U have a nice blog :)
ReplyDeleteI cant believe you received such terrible service! :/
With love,

I've had the exact same happen with my AA disco pants- but as they're more than 6 months old (8) and I bought them through Asos I think it's a bit hopeless! I really loved wearing them! I can't believe the service in AA was so bad! I've never liked shopping in their stores but that manager sounds horrible.

oh i know - AA are naughty x
ReplyDeletelove 'em
ReplyDeleteI used to really want disco pants but i'm so glad I haven't bought them! I only ever hear about their bad quality which is ridiculous for an item of clothing that costs £74! Plus everywhere you go now people are wearing them, they don't have the appeal they used to anymore...
